Hello there, this is Lynn Allen coming to you with another AutoCAD tip courtesy of Cadalyst magazine. Thank you for joining me. Today we are going to talk about a feature that was added in the AutoCAD 2014 -- an awesome feature, I actually don't know how we live without it for so long and that is the File Tabs feature. So for those who you work with a lot of open drawing files at one time, you will love love love this feature. You will have to have it.

These are the File Tabs. They are displayed right below the Riboon on my screen here. You'll see that I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven file tabs displayed right now. For some reason, if you are one of those people who gets paid by open file and you open a zillion of them, you will actually see some arrows on the righthand side of the screen that you can click on and it will show you all of the open files. So it's a really nice feature, you can get a nice little preview, which also comes in handy. So not to worry if they don't all fit. It's not a problem.

Now as you move your cursor across the screen, you actually see that it displays the Layout tabs for each of the open files. I love that as well and if I move my cursor to any one of these, maybe I just scoot over here, and I just move my cursor -- I'm not clicking yet. It will give you a preview of that Layout tab. And you'll also see you can do a really quick plot and a real quick published without having to physically go to the Layout tab. You see when I move my cursor away from there, it goes back to the file that I had opened before the Layout tab that I had opened. So nice feature, right? File tabs are great!

Some other things you can do if you don't like the order, it's super easy just to grab these guys and move them around anyway that you want to. Just drag them and drop them into place so that maybe the drawing you are using more frequently is on the left or whatever works for you.

And if you do a right-click on any of these tabs, you'll also see some cool features. The usual New, Open, Save, blah blah blah. But I like this Close All Except This Tab. That comes in handy. So all of the other open files will shut down and you can save them, and then you just have the one left over. I like that and then and Copy Full File Path. Maybe you want to send an email to somebody and you want to put a direct link to this drawing file. So you copy the full file path to the email and then drop it or paste it into the email. Cool.

Open File Location is for those of you who are disorganized like myself. It will take you to the directory where that file is from. Same thing as what we normally do with Save As, for those of you who are disorganized like myself, it makes it maybe a little bit faster.

So, what if for some reason you have lost mind and you don't like the File Tab. Maybe you are super greedy with your screen real estate or maybe you only work with one open file at a time, then I guess you don't really need them. You can right-click and you can go in Options. Super easy. Go to Display and you will see on here Display File Tab, and you can turn them off, which makes me want to cry. Once again if you only work with one open file at a time, I guess it's not a big deal. You know you can turn off. It doesn't mean you don't like them.

So, thank you so much for joining me. Check out the File Tabs in 2014 and of course 2015. I hope that you have a great rest of the week, and I'll see you back here in two more weeks.
